The Events Coordinator position contributes towards the delivery of services by THE REFUGE to homeless, street, at-risk, and struggling youth in the Regional Municipality of Durham. This position is responsible for planning, leading, and implementing the various special fundraising events of The Refuge. These events are critical to the funding requirements of THE REFUGE as the charity is completely funded through the private sector for operational funding. Special events contribute more than $150,000 in revenue annually.

The Refuge is a Christian charitable organization whose mission statement is “To show Jesus Christ’s love and kindness to the youth of our community through practical and compassionate means of intervention and prevention.” We have been working with homeless, street, at-risk, and struggling youth since 1999. Each year we provide love, caring help, and belonging to hundreds of different youth almost 10,000 times. If you are the successful candidate you will be providing leadership to, planning, and implementing the events of The Refuge which include but are not limited to:

Coldest Night of the Year (February)
Annual Dinner and Cake Auction (May)
Durham ¼ Marathon (July)
Day of Change (November)

Within these events, you will be creating and working with teams of volunteers to implement specific aspects of the above events and retain the services of suppliers for the events and work with them to implement a fantastic, successful event. You will also be expected to interact with media to promote the event, market, and promote the event using a variety of tools including social media, traditional media, and emerging media, develop and work within an approved budget, solicit financial sponsors for the various events, solicit donations in-kind for the various events and be involved in the creative design of marketing/promotional materials.

In reality, there is rarely a dull moment and no two days are the same.

Job Requirements

The most important qualities for which we are looking is an individual who fits well within the current team of The Refuge, someone who is passionate about making a difference, a person with strong leadership and marketing skills, a competitive ‘go-getter’ and a creative problem solver.

Other qualities that are also just as important are:

Accepts the Mission, Vision, and Values statements of The Refuge.
A police criminal records check that meets the standards of The Refuge.
Appropriate educational experience either by formal training or by informal life experiences.
Open to constructive criticism and be able to provide professional feedback and evaluations in areas of responsibility.
Strong interpersonal skills.
Works well under minimal supervision, setting goals and targets.
Demonstrates a mature level of professionalism in all areas of their work environment.
Show a level of concern and compassion for others.
